Food That Fight Breast Cancer“Topping the list of foods you should be eating is courtesy of a new study that shows that eating fatty fish can reduce your risk of developing breast cancer later in life by as much as 14 percent. The study, published in the British Medical Journal, analyzed data from over 800,000 participants and 20,000 cases of breast cancer and found that those whose diets were high in oily fish had a lower risk of developing breast cancer.

Oily fish contains high levels of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), which are responsible for regulating blood vessel and immune system activity. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like mackerel, lake trout, tuna, and salmon are especially important for your health; they’ve already been linked to cancer and heart disease prevention. The study’s researchers believe PUFAs in fish are the reason why some participants had a lower breast cancer risk, especially since the risk was lowest in participants from Asia, who are known for their seafood-heavy diets.”

Breast Cancer Patients Should Avoid High-Fat Dairy Products

Food That Fight Breast CancerPatients who have suffered from breast cancer should avoid consuming high-fat dairy products in order to improve their long-term survival.

The study, carried out by Kaiser Permanente researchers and published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, is one of the first of its kind to identify a link between high fat dairy consumption and poorer breast cancer survival.

Other studies have found associations between certain eating habits and breast cancer risk. Researchers from Michigan State University reported in 2010 that a high-fat diet during puberty can increase breast cancer risk later in life, even among females who never become overweight.

Many dairy products contain elevated estrogen levels – high exposure to estrogen may increase the likelihood of breast cancer, according to previous research.

Estrogen levels are highest in fatty dairy products, compared to low-fat dairy.

While no food or dietary approach can flat-out prevent breast cancer, the risk of developing the disease could be reduced. Here’s a roundup of findings.

A plant-based diet. A recent study suggests that women who eat lots of fruit, veggies and legumes, and little red meat, salt and processed carbohydrates may lower their odds of developing estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer, which accounts for about a quarter of all breast cancers. And a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that the likelihood of the cancer was 20 percent less when women followed such a diet.
